Em nome da mensagem, deixem-me pois mudar o estilo: This is what would happen if there were no humans While biologists learn that the instinct of survival tends to establish the common grounds for animal relations, liberal economists tend to believe that the market has some kind of supra human rationality. Like a hidden God or an all seeing eye. Of course liberal writings and mathematic models can preview almost everything with a certain degree of confidence. In theory everything can be predicted. You can even establish a failure rate for your own cerebral calculations. Lets start from the beginning. What makes us different from all other species? Naturalist will say your thump, religious will say your soul, and scientist will say your brain. Let us try a new approach. What makes it necessary for states to find common grounds of understanding among their citizens (we can also call it laws)? The answer is obvious and because of that almost invisible. The human specie is a creator of rules. Responding to recent or sudden cravings, desires or needs we will create new rules of engagement with other humans. Beyond the primary and secondary instincts, our behaviour is always a riddle because of this ability to create new individual rules, just in the middle of the game. That’s why there is no science able to predict the outcome of the interaction of two or more humans. That’s also why state intervention is always needed to regulate these interactions. First we trusted in divine arbitration. Now there is State intervention to guarantee the protection of our rights from our own ability to change the game during the game. Let me give you an example of this kind of natural/irrational behaviour in the business world. Why, after his first million, does a businessman work himself to death knowing perfectly that he will not have enough time in his life to enjoy the money earned? Why? I like to call it the greed factor. The greed factor! For the same reason rich men will always try to get richer and leading companies will always try to conquer even more market. Yes. In theory all calculations are right. The market will balance himself. The only problem is that the greed factor and its consequences are not quantifiable or even part of that equation. That’s why I find economics such a lovely science. It seems to say: this is what would happen if there were no humans. Rodrigo God´s Bush, in The Alfama School of Economics 2005 edition PS: Greed factor. What a lovely name. What a magnificent concept. I ought to write a book with this stuff. I would surely make tons of dollars in publishing rights and conferences all over the world. |
